Has anyone had any experience with buying "debit" machines from a company versus renting them from a bank? Which did you find to be better? Also, my small gift shop is finally about to open and I wonder if someone could help me decide what to look for when buying a cash register. I have about 10 inventory suppliers and about 15 different types of items. No employees as yet, but hope to hire one soon. Any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks Laura

Hi,

I think gift shop customers have credit cards and debit. I prefer using my credit card always rather than paying cash. I'm not sure if your shop is internet enabled if it is why not use PayPal?

Congratulations on your store openning! I never purchased a debit machine as I only rented from Moneris so I can't say if purchasing is better. The good thing about renting is if anything goes wrong with the machine, Moneris is quick to replace it.

As for which cash register to obtain, it all depends on whether you want it linked to a computerized inventory system (only have 15 itmes?). So if you have a scanner system you can easily monitor your inventory levels when items are sold.

Check the yellow pages under cash register systems or retail store equipment for a list of cash register systems.

Another thing to ask is if you want it tied to your accounting sytem. Talk to your accountant for his or her advice.

Good luck!
