The Why, What, Where and How to Getting Published
Part 3 - Where to Get Published

- By Maja Rehou

So now you know what you are going to write about, but where can you get this free advertising mentioned thus far in the series? The answer is anywhere and everywhere. The most important thing is to find out which publications your clients and prospects read regularly. Typically they include association publications/newsletters and industry specific trade magazines.

Newspapers and MagazinesBusiness papers such as the Business Edge, the Toronto Business Times and the business section of major newspapers are also a good place to go. Depending on what type of service or product you are selling community newspapers or other newsletters and columns may expose you to your target market. To find out what publications are out there and what market reads them see C.A.R.D. (Canadian Rates and Standards), Standard Rates and Data, and the Canadian Business Press.

E-zines
The best first step is to use online e-zines such as www.ezinearticles.com, www.findarticles.com, www.ideamarketers.com or a whole host of others. People pressed for time and looking for content for their own newsletters and publications frequently go to e-zines for content. E-zines are free and easy to use. All you have to do is register and start submitting your articles.

You will not only get exposure on the internet and be exposed to the people reading the e-zine, you will also be promoted by the people who use your content. All content that is taken from online e-zines must include a full attribution of the author E-zines also can lead to more hits to your website and increase your page ranking. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo actually rank a site higher by the amount of site that link back to them as opposed to sites that offer reciprocal links.

Blogs
Blogs are another good way to use the internet to promote yourself. If you are unsure of what to write about or how your reader's will respond to you, try blogging. It is interactive, giving clients, contacts and prospects a venue for discussing matters that are of interest to them. You will soon find out what works and what doesn't from their response and then you can tailor a more formal article as a result.

Opportunities to publish content abound everywhere. Many associations offer their members a chance to write for their publications and because they are run by volunteers, articles are often outwardly solicited.

If you don't have the time to commit to writing a Blog or full length article try writing a column or answering a quick question in a magazine "ask the expert" section.

Once you get your feet writing an e-zine or newsletter article you will have the confidence to write for more formal publications. The more you publish the easier it becomes.
